Peugeot has unveiled an unusual concept that looks at car travel from a perspective that rarely gets attention: the dog’s. The E-5008 Dog Edition was developed together with the Stellantis Design Studio as a one off creation, and it will not reach production. Instead, it works as a design exercise exploring one of the fastest growing themes in mobility today, traveling with pets.
Pets are no longer an afterthought when families plan trips. For many owners, the dog is now a central part of the decision, shaping everything from the choice of destination to the amount of luggage space needed. Peugeot’s design team asked a simple but effective question: what would a car look like if it were designed not just for the driver and passengers, but through the eyes of the animal traveling with them?
Built on the five seat E-5008
The concept starts from the standard Peugeot E-5008, a five seat electric SUV known for its generous interior space and large boot. That practicality makes it a natural base for experimenting with pet focused features, since traveling with a dog usually means more space, more organization, and more attention paid to comfort and safety during stops.
In the Dog Edition, the boot becomes a dedicated zone for the animal, with surfaces and accessories designed to make the transition between home, car, and destination feel more natural and less stressful for the dog.
Colors and materials inspired by canine vision
One of the most original touches is the color palette inside the cabin. Peugeot’s designers drew on research into how dogs actually perceive color, blending calming blue tones with sharper accents of yellow. The blue helps create a relaxed, reassuring atmosphere, while the yellow adds points of visual contrast that are easier for a dog to register.
The materials follow the same logic. Soft, non slip surfaces improve comfort and help the dog feel more stable while the car is moving, reducing the small anxieties that can come with sudden braking or cornering.
A modular mattress that becomes a bed
Among the standout features is a modular mattress designed to follow the dog through different stages of the journey. It can be used in the boot, on the rear seats, or outdoors during a stop. Once the family reaches its destination, the same piece transforms into a proper bed. The idea is to create a sense of continuity between home, car, and vacation spot, so the dog experiences less disruption from the change in environment.ù
There is also a dedicated window headrest, inspired by something every dog owner has seen countless times, the animal resting its head against the glass to watch the scenery go by. Peugeot has turned that instinctive habit into an actual design feature, giving the dog a more comfortable and natural position for the ride.
Accessories built for the whole journey
The E-5008 Dog Edition also comes with a full set of dedicated accessories. These include a harness, separate bags for the dog and for the owner, interior protection panels, built in bowls, and even a branded Peugeot toy.
Perhaps the most practical addition is a pet dryer powered through the car’s V2L function, which uses energy from the vehicle’s battery to run external devices. Stored under the boot floor, the dryer is meant for exactly the kind of moment every dog owner knows well, coming back from a muddy walk, a rainy afternoon, or a trip to the beach.
Smarter navigation for stops that suit the dog too
The digital side of the concept is just as interesting. Rather than simply optimizing the route or locating the nearest charger, the navigation system is designed to make each stop more useful for the dog as well. It can suggest charging stations located near parks or pedestrian areas, turning the pause needed for the electric car into a genuinely useful break, a walk, some water, and a chance to stretch.
As Peugeot points out, when traveling with an animal, a stop is never purely a technical matter. It also needs to account for the dog’s own rhythm and reduce stress from long periods of stillness.
Dog Guardian and Dog Retriever add peace of mind
For short stops where the dog stays briefly in the car, Peugeot has developed Dog Guardian, a mode that automatically keeps the cabin at a comfortable temperature, allows remote monitoring, and alerts the owner that the animal is on board.
Peugeot is careful to note that pet safety remains the owner’s responsibility, and no technology should ever encourage leaving a dog alone for long periods. Still, the feature points toward a broader trend of using sensors, climate control, and connectivity to give owners more oversight during everyday situations.
The concept closes with a smaller but clever touch, Dog Retriever, a function that lets the vehicle emit a specific sound to call a lost dog back and help it find its way back on board.
