New passenger car registrations rose in August in Sweden, with electric vehicles continuing to strengthen their position in the market. The picture was mixed elsewhere, however, with light trucks continuing to recover while heavy trucks and buses declined compared with the same month last year.
Passenger cars up 12 percent
A total of 22,584 new passenger cars were registered in August, a 12 percent increase compared with the same month last year. So far this year, the passenger car market is running 2 percent ahead of the same period last year.
Electric vehicles continue to gain share, reaching 45 percent of new registrations in August, up from 34 percent in the same month last year, a volume increase of 49 percent. So far this year, electric vehicles account for 42 percent of new registrations, compared with 35 percent over the same period last year. The trend is being driven by new models reaching more customer segments and a recovery in the private market. Over the first eight months of the year, private customers’ share of electric vehicle registrations has risen from 32 to 39 percent, with close to two out of three of those financed through private leasing.

Mobility Sweden CEO Jessica Alenius says the strengthening position of electric vehicles in the Swedish market shows that supply is now meeting demand across more customer segments, while private interest in electric vehicles keeps growing. She adds that private leasing plays an important role in the transition by making electric vehicles accessible to more households.
Light trucks continue to recover
Following a long period of declining registrations between May 2024 and August 2025, the light truck market continues to recover. 3,145 new light trucks were registered in August, up 27 percent compared with the same month last year. So far this year, the light truck segment is up 20 percent. The share of electric light trucks reached 30 percent in August, nearly double the figure from last year, though the sharp rise is partly explained by a weak August for electric light trucks in 2025. So far this year, the electric share stands at 26 percent, up from 23 percent last year.
Alenius says the recovery in light trucks is continuing, and together with the growing share of electric vehicles, it clearly shows that both investment and willingness to transition exist in the market.
Heavy trucks and buses decline
Heavy truck registrations totalled 351 vehicles in August, down 7 percent. So far this year, the segment is close to last year’s level, with only a marginal decline. The electric share reached 13 percent in August, and so far this year one in ten new trucks has been electric.
Alenius notes that the heavy truck segment is stabilising this year following a noticeable market drop in 2025, while electrification continues to strengthen its position, though the pace needs to increase. She describes this as an important development for both the competitiveness of the transport sector and the broader climate transition.
Bus registrations totalled 106 units in August, down 59 percent compared with the same month last year. So far this year, bus registrations are down 44 percent. The decline, both in August and for the year to date, should be seen against the strong development in 2025, when the market benefited from recovering deliveries following earlier supply problems. The bus market is also heavily influenced by public transport procurement cycles, which can cause large variations between individual months and years. So far this year, roughly every second new bus has been electric.
