Volkswagen has presented its first fully electric camper model, the ID. California Cruise, based on the ID. Buzz. The van will arrive in early 2027, with prices in Germany starting at 60,761 euros, which converts to roughly 454,400 DKK, 664,100 SEK or 665,300 NOK at current exchange rates. Specifications and pricing for other markets have not yet been confirmed, but Volkswagen has already confirmed that further battery electric California models will follow in 2028.
A parked camper that doubles as a power bank
The ID. Buzz’s electric platform proved well suited to the camper conversion, thanks to its compact mechanical footprint and completely flat floor.
Following the tradition of the California line, first introduced in 1988, Volkswagen has built a compact van with sleeping space for two. Standard equipment includes a new foldable mattress 9 cm thick, blinds for all windows, two folding chairs and a small table. A glass roof with its own blind is available as an option.
A dedicated ID. California mode allows the van to power select onboard systems and USB sockets while parked, with the climate control able to keep running for up to 48 hours.
Through its Vehicle to Load function, the van can also power external devices with up to 3.6 kW of output.
286 hp and 460 km of range
Volkswagen offers the California in two wheelbase lengths, though the mechanical package is shared across both versions.
It features rear wheel drive, a single motor producing 286 hp and 560 Nm of torque, and an 86 kWh battery giving a homologated range of 460 km. Top speed is electronically limited to 160 km/h, while the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes under 8 seconds.
