Denmark’s automotive market continued its impressive performance in February 2026, with electric vehicles dominating new car registrations at unprecedented levels. Among private buyers, a remarkable 94.4% of newly purchased vehicles were powered by electricity, reflecting the country’s accelerating shift toward sustainable transportation.
Stable growth drives optimism for 2026
The month of February brought consistent results for car sales across Denmark. According to Bilstatistik.dk, a total of 11,933 new personal vehicles were registered during the month, representing a modest increase of 2.8% compared to February 2025. More significantly, the cumulative figures for the first two months of 2026 show strong momentum, with new car registrations up 10.2 percent compared to the same period last year.
From niche to mainstream
The electrification of Denmark’s automotive market has reached a new milestone. In February, electric vehicles accounted for 9,736 of all new registrations, representing 81.6% of total new car sales. The picture becomes even more striking when examining the private buyer segment, where electric vehicles captured 94.4% of the market.

This remarkable penetration reflects both strong consumer preference for greener vehicles and sustained government support for the country’s transition to a more sustainable automotive sector. The continued availability of reduced registration fees for electric vehicles has made switching to electric power an economically attractive choice for consumers.
Who leads the e-run
The February rankings reveal clear winners in Denmark’s competitive electric vehicle market. The Toyota bZ4X claimed the top spot with 1,364 units sold, followed by the Skoda Elroq with 681 sales. The Volkswagen ID.4 secured third place with 575 registrations.

Other notable performers included the Skoda Enyaq iV (467 units), the Audi Q4 e-tron (400 units), and the Tesla Model Y (350 units). The list of top ten models is dominated by electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, underscoring the market’s clear preference for electrified powertrains.
