Until now, cloud streaming was a distinguishing benefit reserved for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, enabling players to stream games to a wide range of devices without downloading. With this update, Microsoft is widening access so that Core and Standard subscribers can also stream select Game Pass titles via Xbox Cloud Gaming. The company also confirmed that select PC versions of games will be accessible to these lower tiers, expanding the ways players can experience titles through the service.

The Evolution of Xbox Game Pass

Xbox Game Pass has evolved significantly over the years. In 2023 Microsoft replaced Xbox Live Gold with the Core tier, which provides online multiplayer plus a limited library. In 2024, Microsoft introduced the Standard tier to sit between Core and Ultimate. While Ultimate still offers the most comprehensive package, bringing cloud streaming to the lower tiers makes Core and Standard more compelling options for cost-conscious players.

The new cloud streaming availability is currently limited to Xbox Insider program participants, who often receive early access to features and updates for testing. Microsoft has stated that the changes will roll out to all users in the future, but it has not provided a firm public release date for the wider rollout.
