The Volvo XC70 name returns – now as an SUV and the brand’s first with range extender technology, offering 200 km of pure electric range, the longest range ever achieved by a Volvo hybrid.
The name XC70 recalls one of the most iconic models in Volvo’s history. Originally introduced as the all-road version of the V70, the first XC70 was a symbol of adventure and versatility. Today, that same DNA returns in a mid-size SUV format, slightly larger than the XC60, with renewed focus on comfort, space, and sustainability.

Volvo is responding to the growing demand for long-range electrified vehicles, primarily in China but also increasingly in Europe, positioning the XC70 as a key step forward in its transition toward sustainable mobility. Currently, few details have been released—mainly regarding design—while the model is expected to debut in the coming months, first in China and potentially later in Europe.
Volvo XC70: a new platform
The Volvo XC70 introduces the brand-new SMA platform, an architecture specifically developed for long-range plug-in hybrids. Although it’s a hybrid model, its design closely aligns with Volvo’s latest electric vehicles, especially the EX90.

This is evident in the clean front end with a closed grille and active shutters that optimize aerodynamics, cooling, and efficiency—along with the Thor’s Hammer headlights featuring advanced Matrix LED technology. At the squared-off rear, vertically oriented taillights return, now extending deeply toward the center of the tailgate for a bold, modern look.
