The electric vehicle revolution continues in Denmark. In April 2025, battery electric vehicles made up an astonishing 83% of all new car sales to private buyers, signaling a clear shift in Danish consumer preferences toward greener mobility.

A total of 15,118 new passenger cars were registered last month—virtually the same as in April 2024. However, the EV segment saw explosive growth. According to figures from bilstatistik.dk, 9,566 electric cars were sold in April alone, marking a 45.5% increase compared to the same month last year. Overall, EVs accounted for 63% of all new car sales across the board.

This surge in demand for electric cars has prompted a major rethink at the policy level. The Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Utilities recently revised its projections, now estimating that 1 million electric cars will be on Danish roads by 2028—two years earlier than previously forecast.

Tesla Falls Behind as VW Group Models Dominate

One of the most surprising developments in April’s sales data is the absence of Tesla from the top 10 best-selling car models—an extremely rare occurrence in recent years. Instead, the list is dominated by Volkswagen Group’s MEB-based electric vehicles, which occupy five of the top six spots. The only non-MEB model to break into the top tier is the Toyota bZ4X.

Notably, only three of the ten most popular models run on fossil fuels, highlighting the growing dominance of EVs in Denmark’s new car market.
