Electric car technology keeps advancing quickly, with new models able to accept ever higher charging power. To stay ahead of that curve, Danish charging operator Clever is now investing in charging infrastructure designed to grow alongside future electric vehicles.
The first two megawatt chargers for passenger cars are now ready for use at Fætter BR on Jyllingevej 336 in Rødovre.
How the new charging system works
Each megawatt charging system is built differently from Clever’s existing fast chargers. Instead of a single charging unit with two connectors, the system delivers up to 1,000 kW across four separate units at the charging bays. Each unit has two connectors and a screen used to start charging, with all eight connectors sharing the total available power, which is automatically distributed between the cars charging at any given time.
When usage is low, a single connector can deliver up to 600 kW. Under the right conditions, this allows compatible electric cars to charge from 10 to 80 percent in around 12 minutes.
Built with future electric cars in mind
Since most electric cars cannot yet accept up to 600 kW, the system’s capacity is initially used by spreading the 1,000 kW output across eight connectors, allowing more cars to charge at the same time. As more new electric cars become capable of higher charging speeds, the system can be reconfigured with fewer connectors delivering higher power each, ensuring more efficient use of the charging infrastructure over time, with shorter charging stops and greater throughput at each station.
Sukstorf explains that faster charging is also about making better use of charging infrastructure itself. As electric cars charge faster, the same charging station can serve more cars over the course of a day, resulting in shorter charging stops, greater throughput and more efficient use of available capacity.
A better experience for drivers
The new generation of megawatt chargers has also been designed with a stronger focus on user experience. The charging units are more compact and quieter, with the screen placed on the front of each unit to make it easier to see and operate. Combined with clear light indicators, this makes it simple to follow the charging process, offering better visibility, a smoother flow at the station, and a more intuitive experience both for drivers charging and for anyone waiting.
A wider rollout is coming from 2027
The installation in Rødovre marks the first step in Clever’s rollout of 1,000 kW chargers. From 2027, megawatt chargers will become standard equipment at most newly built Clever fast charging stations.
