The race for Car of the Year 2026 has reached its final phase. From an initial pool of 35 contenders, the jury has chosen seven cars to vie for one of Europe’s most prestigious automotive honours — a list that underlines how electric vehicles are reshaping the continent’s market.

The European contest is decided by a jury of 60 members from 23 countries, who evaluate cars across Europe on criteria such as innovation, design, performance, efficiency and value.

The seven finalists

After the first round of voting, the following seven models have advanced to the final:

  1. Citroën C5 Aircross
  2. Dacia Bigster
  3. Fiat Grande Panda
  4. Kia EV4
  5. Mercedes CLA
  6. Renault 4
  7. Škoda Elroq

Three of these — the Kia EV4, Mercedes-Benz CLA, and Renault 4 — were also finalists in the Danish Årets Bil 2026, showing strong cross-market appeal.

How and when the winner will be chosen

The final winner will be announced on 9 January 2026 at the Brussels International Motor Show. Prior to the announcement the seven finalists will undergo a last joint test session at Parc Motor Castellolí near Barcelona. Organisers have chosen Spain to host the tests for the first time to benefit from reliable weather and stable testing conditions.

What this year’s field tells us

The 2026 shortlist highlights the ongoing electrification of the European car market, but it also includes strong choices from traditional segments — a reminder that design, practicality and value still matter alongside zero-emission technology.
