Second time is better? Nio is expanding its footprint in Denmark, this time with the introduction of a more affordable sub-brand: Nio Firefly, which already debuted in Norway in June. In partnership with the Nic. Christiansen Group, Nio aims to offer Danish drivers a compact, well-equipped electric car without compromising on comfort or technology.
Firefly launches with a single model: a five-door mini hatchback designed to take on competitors like the Volkswagen ID.3, Renault 5 E-Tech, BYD Dolphin Surf and Fiat 500e. While it enters the market as a budget-friendly option, Firefly surprises with features usually reserved for premium EVs — including battery-swapping capability, a rarity in this price class.
Nio Firefly: Efficient and Urban-Friendly
Powering the Firefly is a rear-mounted electric motor producing 141 hp and 200 Nm of torque, allowing the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in around 8.2 seconds.
The car is equipped with a 42.1 kWh LFP battery supplied by Sunwoda, offering a claimed range of up to 420 km on China’s CLTC standard. For Europe, a more realistic WLTP estimate puts the range closer to 330 km — still respectable for its class.

Charging is flexible: drivers can either fast-charge from 10% to 80% in 29 minutes or swap the battery entirely at one of Nio’s dedicated battery-swapping stations — a unique selling point in Denmark’s EV landscape.
With a length of 4 meters and a wheelbase of 2.61 meters, the Firefly fits neatly into the urban EV segment. Yet, it manages to offer 334 liters of trunk space and an additional 92-liter frunk up front. The suspension, developed in collaboration with Canadian engineering firm Multimatic, promises comfort and driving dynamics beyond the segment standard.
Despite its price-conscious positioning, the Firefly’s interior doesn’t cut corners. Highlights include:
- 13.2-inch infotainment screen;
- 6-inch digital instrument cluster;
- 14-speaker Dolby Atmos sound system;
- 256-color ambient lighting;
- NOMI AI voice assistant;
- Wireless phone charging;
- Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function for powering external devices
These features collectively aim to provide a user experience more often seen in significantly more expensive EVs.
Launching in Denmark This Fall
The Nic. Christiansen Group, already responsible for brands like Hyundai, BYD, and Ford in Denmark, will lead the national rollout of both Nio and Firefly. CEO Niels Vrist Bertelsen expressed strong confidence in the partnership:
The first Danish showroom will open in Copenhagen this autumn, followed by additional locations in Aarhus and Odense. Casper Mysling, known for previous launches at Nic. Christiansen Group, has been appointed Country Manager for Nio Denmark.
While Danish pricing hasn’t been officially confirmed, Firefly has launched in Norway at 279,900 NOK, roughly 184,000 DKK. If that pricing holds, Firefly could become one of Denmark’s most affordable electric vehicles, while still packing an impressive array of features.
