A year has passed since the Danish capital unveiled five new metro stations along the Copenhagen Metro M4 line, extending public transport access to the areas of Sydhavn and Valby. And the response? Overwhelmingly positive.
According to figures released by Metroselskabet—the company behind Copenhagen’s metro system—more than 5.8 million passengers have used the new section of the Copenhagen Metro M4 line since its launch. That’s a striking 80 percent more than initially expected, showcasing the rapid adoption and popularity of the extension among residents, commuters, and businesses alike.
The five stations, which opened in June 2024, were designed to better connect previously underserved neighborhoods to the rest of the city. The extension includes stations at København Syd, Mozarts Plads, Sluseholmen, Teglholmen, and Enghave Brygge—areas that have seen rapid development in recent years with new housing, offices, and waterfront spaces.
On average, the new stations now accommodate around 17,600 weekday passengers, demonstrating how integral they’ve already become in the city’s daily transit patterns.
“We’re of course very pleased that people have embraced the five new stations on the M4 so quickly,” said Hanne Tærsbøl Schmidt, Director at Metroselskabet. “The high number of passengers shows that both residents and businesses in these areas have recognized the value of the Metro as an efficient and convenient way to move around the city.”
The success of the M4 extension highlights the continued demand for sustainable and well-connected urban mobility options. It also reinforces Copenhagen’s reputation as a global leader in green transport infrastructure. As the city continues to grow and urbanize, investments in public transport like the M4 extension are proving essential in shaping a more connected, accessible, and environmentally conscious metropolis.
