The Chery Tiggo 9L is the Chinese brand’s latest super SUV and it made its debut at the Shanghai Auto Show. It’s one of Chery’s major highlights, alongside upcoming Omoda models set to be revealed on April 26. The 9L earns its “super” title not only for its imposing size but also for its impressive power and sophisticated hybrid powertrain.
We’re talking about a high-performance hybrid system, three electric motors, and advanced driver assistance technologies. Despite sharing a similar name, the Tiggo 9L is not directly related to the already available Tiggo 9.
Tiggo 9L: between “Hero” and “Home”
Visually, the Tiggo 9L immediately stands out with H-shaped LED headlights, which according to Chery, symbolize “Hero” and “Home”. The headlights are connected by a sleek LED strip running across the front fascia, right above the letter-based logo, which also appears at the rear between the taillights. It’s worth noting that the front end bears some resemblance to the new Hyundai Santa Fe.

The side profile is bold and muscular, featuring pronounced wheel arches, side steps, roof rails, and 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels—a blend of ruggedness and modernity aimed at style-conscious, practical buyers.

Underneath its stylish body, the Tiggo 9L integrates Chery’s Falcon 700 advanced driving assistance system, powered by roof-mounted LiDAR sensors and cameras in the front fenders. The Falcon system is divided into three levels:
- Falcon 500 and 700, which support Level 2 autonomous driving;
- Falcon 900, which enables Level 3 capabilities
A futuristic cabin
Inside, the Tiggo 9L promises a futuristic experience thanks to an AI-powered smart cockpit backed by a 3nm chip. The dashboard houses three displays: one for the driver, a central screen for vehicle controls, and a dedicated entertainment screen for the front passenger. True to its rugged nature, grab handles are present for both the driver and co-pilot.

The SUV will be available in both 6- and 7-seat configurations, although Chery has yet to reveal official dimensions.
A new kind of hybrid
Chery already made headlines with its Super Hybrid system, tested in the Jaecoo 7 SHS (read our test drive here), but with the Tiggo 9L, things are taken even further. The vehicle uses the Kunpeng Super Performance Hybrid CDM-S system, a sophisticated setup featuring three electric motors, designed for top-tier performance and efficiency.

It also includes CDC (Continuous Damping Control) suspension for adaptive ride comfort and the Tank Turn feature—ideal for tough off-road conditions where tight maneuvering is required.
The Kunpeng hybrid system comes in multiple versions:
- CDM/CEM: High-efficiency, found in models like the Fulwin A8, T8, T9, and Shanhai L6 to L9;
- CDM-S/CEM-S: High-performance, applied to models like Yaoguang CDM, VX CDM, and Fulwin T10;
- CDM-O/CEM-O: Off-road focused, used in vehicles like the Shanhai T2 and Zongheng G700
