The luxury off-road segment is becoming increasingly popular in China, with an annual growth rate of 30%, and FAW doesn’t want to be left behind. That’s why, at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show, Hongqi unveiled its first high-end new energy off-road SUV, officially marking the Chinese brand’s debut in the competitive luxury off-roader segment.
With this launch, Hongqi not only enters a rapidly growing market but also engages the global public: a naming campaign has been launched for the new model, with the promise that the winner will receive a free unit of the car once it hits the market.
The SUV is set to compete with the Chinese version of the Ford Bronco, as well as other domestic offerings such as BYD’s Yangwang brand, Chery, and the Geely Cowboy.
Extreme but balanced design for the Hongqi off-roader
The new Hongqi SUV stands out with a design that pays homage to traditional Chinese architecture. The front-end aesthetics are inspired by the mortise and tenon joint, an ancient woodworking technique.

This is complemented by a geometric grille, round headlights that resemble the human eye, and the unmistakable red strip of the Hongqi logo. Mounted on the roof are a lidar sensor and a camera on the front fender, indicating advanced driver assistance features.

At the rear, the SUV features classic hardcore off-road design elements: an external spare tire, side-opening tailgate, and vertical taillights. The side profile showcases a boxy silhouette paired with a desert yellow and black paint scheme, a side ladder, roof racks, side steps, and pronounced wheel arches. Hongqi’s identity is also visible in various red accents, such as the center hub of the wheels and the wheel arch trim.

Under the bodywork lies a four-motor system developed in-house by Hongqi, capable of accelerating the SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4 seconds. The vehicle also features triple differential locks, reinforcing its extreme off-road capabilities. More technical details about the powertrain are expected in the coming months.
