Xiaomi EV has introduced SkyNomad, the second product series to sit alongside its existing Xiaomi SU7 and Xiaomi YU7 lineup. While those two models were built around the idea of the driver’s car, SkyNomad takes a different approach entirely, positioning itself as an intelligent, reconfigurable, large space SUV aimed squarely at the people riding inside rather than the person behind the wheel.
Two answers to two different needs
According to Xiaomi, the SU7 and YU7 series and the new SkyNomad series represent two distinct philosophies shaped by more than five years of the company’s work in car manufacturing. Where the SU7 and YU7 put the driving experience first, SkyNomad shifts the focus to the cabin itself, treating it as a living space that can adapt through the different hours of a day. The launch marks another expansion of Xiaomi’s growing electric vehicle portfolio.
Why Xiaomi decided space alone was not enough
Chinese automakers have moved quickly in recent years, and large six and seven seat layouts with feature packed interiors have become common across the market. Xiaomi argues that space and equipment are no longer the deciding factors for buyers. Instead, the company believes the real question has become whether occupants actually feel comfortable inside the car, regardless of how big it is or how soft the seats are.
That thinking is rooted in how people genuinely use their vehicles today. Many spend up to two hours a day commuting, rest in the driver’s seat during breaks, work from a parked car, take the family away for the weekend, or turn the vehicle into a temporary home while camping. For these owners, Xiaomi sees the car as an extension of everyday living space, one that simply happens to move.
This idea became the starting point for SkyNomad’s development back in early 2023.
A cabin designed to adapt, not just to grow bigger
SkyNomad is built on Xiaomi’s newly developed Kunlun Architecture, created specifically to allow the interior to be reconfigured depending on how the car is being used. Inside the SUV body, a flat floor combined with a long track seating system lets the cabin switch between a driving mode, with generous room for passengers, luggage and pets, and a parked mode, where the same space can transform into a workspace, a lounge, or an area for family activities.
Making that transformation possible required combining artificial intelligence, Xiaomi’s broader smart device ecosystem, and its smart manufacturing capabilities. Xiaomi founder, chairman and CEO **Lei Jun** has pointed to this specific combination as one where the company holds a rare depth of expertise.
Describing the development process in a post on Weibo, Lei Jun wrote that the team’s answer was to let intelligence define the space itself, creating a living interior that moves together with its owner.
Built for one person living several roles
Xiaomi says SkyNomad is aimed at buyers who need a single vehicle capable of covering daily commuting, family travel, and occasional work from the car, rather than a car built purely as a lifestyle statement. The company describes its intended audience as professionals and parents alike, not as two separate groups, but as the same person moving through different roles across the same day.
Xiaomi SkyNomad is expected to launch soon in mainland China, following three and a half years of development. Further details are expected in the coming period.
