OnePlus has decided to expand its range of smartwatches with a new model: OnePlus Watch 3 43 mm, a more compact version compared to the previous generation, designed for those who want an elegant, lightweight device suitable even for slimmer wrists. See here our review of the “normal” OnePlus Watch 3.
Despite the reduced size, the compromises compared to the standard model are minimal, making it a versatile smartwatch, perfect for everyday life and capable of appealing to a wide audience, including a female demographic that didn’t always find the previous models suitable.

OnePlus Watch 3 43mm: our tops&flops

Surely, the OnePlus Watch 3 43 mm is the most usable version in all contexts, as it is more compact but also more elegant, with visually pleasing straps that adapt to any type of outfit. I’ve received several compliments, which means the intention has been successful. Another positive aspect is that it retains all the typical features of the Watch 3: it has a beautiful display, is highly customizable, powerful, and smooth. In short, a great everyday companion. Of course, smaller dimensions also mean a smaller battery: the 43 mm version clearly cannot match the endurance of the regular Watch 3, lasting 2 to 3 days depending on usage. Still, that’s more than some much more expensive rivals. In addition, OHealth remains a closed system for non-Android users, since there is no OHealth app for iOS.

What we don’t like:

  • Strap materials are not particularly premium;
  • Battery life inevitably decreases.

Design and ergonomics

The main strength of the new Watch 3 43 mm is undoubtedly its design. The case measures 43.2 x 43.2 mm, with a thickness of just 11 mm and a weight of only 37.8 grams (without strap). Made of aluminum with a plastic underside, it feels pleasant on the wrist and is ideal for those who dislike bulky smartwatches.

The included strap is minimal and lightweight, easily replaceable with other compatible bands. Unlike the Watch 2, where the strap was recessed into the case and felt more rigid, the ergonomics here are improved: the device is comfortable throughout the day and even at night. Available in different colors, including the classic black with a gray case and a gold variant, it adapts to various tastes.

The display is a 1.32-inch AMOLED, slightly smaller with more noticeable bezels compared to the larger model. However, performance remains good, with a peak brightness of 1000 nits, more than adequate for outdoor use. The lack of circular polarization might limit use with sport sunglasses, but overall the experience remains solid. On the sides, there are the two classic physical buttons: one dedicated to workouts and another multifunction button with a rotating crown, useful for scrolling through menus and notifications, offering satisfying haptic feedback.

Hardware and performance

OnePlus retains the dual-processor setup already seen on the Watch 2:

  • Snapdragon for apps and high-performance tasks.
  • BES coprocessor for low-power daily functions, such as watchfaces and notifications.

This solution optimizes battery life: with regular use, it lasts up to 5 days, while with heavy usage (3D animations active, constant monitoring, demanding apps) it drops to around 2 days.

The new Watch 3 supports heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, and sports activities with improved accuracy compared to the previous generation. The ECG is missing, but given that it didn’t have real medical value, its absence isn’t too impactful in everyday use.

The operating system, based on Android, offers compatibility with numerous third-party apps like WhatsApp, Google Maps, and others downloadable from the store. However, the same limitations remain: some apps are not fully integrated and require a constant connection to the smartphone.

Among the most useful features are NFC and built-in GPS, allowing payments via Google Wallet, easy access to boarding passes, and outdoor workout tracking with apps like Outdoor Active, including turn-by-turn navigation.
