OnePlus announced the conclusion of its five-year collaboration with Hasselblad and the start of a new era in smartphone photography with the unveiling of the OnePlus DetailMax Engine, an in-house computational imaging platform focused on delivering clear, natural, and true-to-life photos.
When OnePlus and Hasselblad began working together five years ago, the objective was straightforward: bring Hasselblad’s legendary color science into OnePlus phones to make images that looked like real life—not overly processed or artificially enhanced. During the collaboration, teams obsessively refined color profiles, balanced light and shadow, and tuned image pipelines so that millions of users could capture memories that felt authentic.
Why DetailMax?
With that chapter complete, OnePlus is shifting focus to its own imaging stack. The DetailMax Engine is designed from the ground up to prioritise the single thing users care about most: clarity when you zoom in. After extensive user interviews and focus groups worldwide, OnePlus found that the first thing many people do after taking a photo is pinch to zoom—and DetailMax is optimised for that moment.
Computational photography has matured beyond gimmicks. Where earlier systems sometimes created artificial-looking results, modern algorithms combined with greater processing power allow makers to capture and interpret more data—rendering texture, depth, and colour more faithfully. OnePlus says DetailMax aims to reveal the world exactly as it appears, avoiding over-beautification and synthetic alterations.
OnePlus engineers are already testing early prototypes of DetailMax. Although further tuning is planned, internal results are promising—so much so that the company expects the engine to set a new benchmark for clarity in its class by the time it ships on the next flagship device.
Thanks to Hasselblad — and a look ahead
OnePlus publicly thanked Hasselblad for a productive collaboration, calling it a “masterclass” that has become part of OnePlus’ imaging DNA. While the formal partnership is ending, OnePlus said it remains open to future collaborations and will continue seeking partners that share its commitment to precision and craft.
For OnePlus owners and smartphone photography enthusiasts, the rise of DetailMax promises clearer, more faithful images—especially when examining photos closely. OnePlus emphasised that every improvement is driven by user feedback and thousands of hours of refinement with the community in mind.
