After the debut of the ES90 (watch our preview here), the new Volvo S90 also arrives — a restyling of the Swedish combustion flagship that completely updates its design, bringing it closer to the XC90, along with refreshed technological features.
Volvo thus continues to offer a dual approach — electric or combustion — but always with an eye toward electrification, thanks to the updated hybrid engines. The new Volvo S90 will be available first in China, with a rollout to other markets, including Europe, expected in the second half of the year.
New Volvo S90: more modern design
The exterior design of the new S90 stands out with a modern and clean look, featuring sharp lines and a sleek profile that emphasizes the car’s road presence.

The front end has been redesigned to look bolder, featuring a new graphic grille and updated “Thor’s Hammer” headlights, now equipped with new matrix LED technology that provides a wider and deeper beam of light in all conditions.

The rear has also been refined, with new taillights that integrate harmoniously into the design — also echoing the Mjöllnir (Thor’s Hammer) styling — along with a newly sculpted trunk lid, redesigned bumpers, and reshaped wheel arches for an even more sophisticated presence. Completing the aesthetic package are new diamond-cut wheels with raw aluminum and glossy black finishes, as well as two new metallic colors: Aurora Silver and Mulberry Red.

The interior offers a contemporary luxury experience, with high-quality materials and new finishes designed to enhance comfort. At the heart of the tech setup is a new 11.2-inch central display — fully independent and designed to deliver fast, smooth, and safe interaction with the onboard infotainment system. The system runs on Volvo’s new user interface, still based on Android Automotive, which will be rolled out across the entire range and is over-the-air updateable for continuous improvements.
New Plug-in Hybrid, but still no fast charging
The new Volvo S90 is available in two electrified versions. The plug-in hybrid variant offers up to 80 km (WLTP) of electric range, allowing for most daily trips to be made with zero emissions. Volvo Cars highlights that, on average, nearly half of the kilometers driven in its latest plug-in hybrid models are powered exclusively by electricity. However, unlike many competitors — or even its distant cousin, the Lynk & Co 08 — it still lacks fast charging.

For those seeking a more traditional experience, there’s also a mild hybrid version, equipped with a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with front-wheel drive, combining solid power with high efficiency.
As is tradition for Volvo, safety remains a cornerstone of the new S90. The car features an advanced protective structure and a suite of active safety systems, including Pilot Assist — the assisted driving system designed for comfortable driving on highways and single-lane roads. In addition to maintaining set speed and adapting to traffic, the system can follow the car in front, automatically brake to a stop in heavy traffic, and help the driver keep the vehicle centered in the lane.
