A nod to the past

Audi is reviving the A2 name, retired in 2005 after the compact MPV was discontinued. The A2 e-tron will indirectly replace the Audi A1 and Q2, both expected to be phased out by the end of 2026. Its design subtly references the original A2, particularly at the rear, where a spoiler splits the tailgate, giving a nod to the past.

The front end aligns with the current e-tron family, featuring a closed grille and slim headlights. At the back, horizontal tail lights are connected by a sleek light bar, continuing Audi’s modern electric design language.

Platform and Powertrain

Originally intended to use Volkswagen Group’s new SSP platform, development delays led Audi to adopt the MEB platform, likely the upgraded MEB+. While powertrain details remain unconfirmed, the use of MEB suggests that the A2 e-tron could share drivetrains with the Volkswagen ID.3, possibly updated versions to match the ID.3’s major 2026 refresh.

Strategic Importance

The A2 e-tron will play a key role in Audi’s electric strategy, helping the brand expand its presence in the growing EV market. With the official debut approaching, enthusiasts and industry watchers are eagerly awaiting more details about this compact electric hatchback.
