Iveco and Toyota have launched a partnership to develop next generation heavy duty hydrogen fuel cell trucks. The collaboration sits within EMPOWER, a Horizon Europe project funded by the European Union to advance zero emission heavy transport.

Who does what

Toyota will supply the fuel cell system for Iveco’s new hydrogen powered vehicles, while Iveco leads vehicle development, integration and validation, including real world testing with customers.

The truck: power, range and durability

At the centre of the partnership is the Iveco S-eWay Fuel Cell, fitted with a Toyota fuel cell system delivering a combined 300 kW of power. Iveco states the truck achieves a range of more than 900 km and an operational lifespan beyond 25,000 hours.

Compared with the first generation fuel cell trucks used in the earlier H2Haul project, the new vehicle is lighter and mechanically simpler. More efficient energy management has also cut the battery capacity needed roughly in half compared with the previous generation.

Testing timeline

Validation and testing work is set to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, with on road trials expected from the first half of 2027. The stated goal is to prove the technology works under demanding operating conditions, as a step toward eventual large scale production.

Combining decades of hydrogen experience

Toyota brings more than three decades of fuel cell development across mobility and industrial applications, while Iveco contributes experience gained from its earlier hydrogen projects. Both companies describe their respective expertise as complementary.

Iveco is also taking part in EMPOWER with a battery electric demonstrator, reflecting an approach that combines multiple technologies in parallel as it works toward decarbonising heavy transport.
