Copenhagen’s new light rail, Hovedstadens Letbane, has made a striking debut, carrying significantly more passengers than expected in its first month of operation. Since its official opening on October 26, the service has averaged approximately 5,600 weekday passengers—a figure well above the projected 3,500 passengers per day anticipated for the initial six months.
Transport officials have described the early results as “encouraging,” highlighting the public’s appetite for efficient and sustainable alternatives to car travel. The light rail connects suburban neighborhoods with central parts of the city, offering commuters a fast, reliable, and environmentally friendly way to navigate the metropolitan area.

Passengers love the Letbane
The first phase of the Letbane stretches from Ishøj to Rødovre, encompassing 12 stations in total. The line was designed to relieve congestion on roads and improve connectivity for communities that previously relied heavily on buses and private vehicles. Early reports suggest that the line is already helping to reduce traffic along some of the busiest corridors.
Looking forward, the light rail network is set to expand further. The northern section, running from Herlev Syd to Lundtofte, is expected to open next summer, extending the line’s reach and offering even more commuters a convenient transit option. Planners hope that the expansion will continue to boost ridership, particularly among residents who currently face longer and less predictable commutes.
