Formula 1 heads to Monza, with Antonelli starting last and Ferrari going all in

Formula 1 returns to the Temple of Speed this weekend for the Italian Grand Prix, one of the most anticipated rounds of the season for Ferrari fans. The 97th edition of the race runs from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 September, with practice, qualifying and the race itself all taking place at Monza.

Antonelli leads the championship but starts from the back

Andrea Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers’ championship for Mercedes with 242 points, ahead of teammate George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, both on 183. Despite his championship lead, Antonelli will start Sunday’s race from last on the grid after serving a penalty. An Italian driver has not won at Monza since 1966, when Ludovico Scarfiotti crossed the line first for Ferrari, making any result from the back of the grid a genuine longshot.

Ferrari brings a new power unit for its home race

Attention also turns to Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, who will run a new power unit for the team’s home race. According to reports, the updated engines have shown no reliability issues in testing, and Leclerc and Hamilton are expected to have extra power available, which could prove useful on Monza’s long straights. A closely fought race is expected.

Where to watch in the Nordics

Across Denmark, Sweden and Norway, the Italian Grand Prix is covered by Viaplay Group, which holds Formula 1 broadcasting rights across the Nordic region through the 2029 season. Every practice session, qualifying session and the race itself are shown live on the Viaplay streaming service in all three markets.

In Denmark, sessions also air on Viaplay Group’s pay-TV channels TV3+ and TV3 Sport. In Sweden, live coverage runs on the Viaplay Total package, with Viaplay’s sister channel TV6 also part of the group’s sports offering. In Norway, Formula 1 is likewise reserved for the Viaplay Total tier, as the lower-priced Viaplay Medium package does not include the race weekend.
