BYD is taking an unconventional step by extending plug-in hybrid technology into Europe’s compact car segment with the BYD Dolphin G DM-i. Set for presentation in June and European markets orders beginning that month, the first deliveries are scheduled for October 2026.

The move positions BYD in territory largely untouched by competitors. While plug-in hybrids dominate premium and mid-size categories, no manufacturer has seriously pursued the segment B market with this powertrain combination. Renault attempted this with the Captur E-Tech Plug-in, but without sustained commitment. Now Chinese brands like MG and Leapmotor among them are eyeing the segment as a growth opportunity.

Pricing and positioning

Pricing is expected to hover around €25,000, creating an intriguing competitive dynamic. At that level, the Dolphin G would sit between BYD’s own segment B electric model (the Dolphin Surf) and the segment B-SUV Atto 2 PHEV, which starts at €27,600. More significantly, it would enter direct competition with conventional full-hybrid compacts—particularly models like the Toyota Yaris hybrid—which currently dominate the segment for low fuel consumption and reliability.

The conventional argument against plug-in hybrids in this class holds weight: they require charging to deliver optimal efficiency, while full hybrids do not. However, BYD’s DM-i architecture operates primarily on electric drive, using the internal combustion engine to generate power rather than directly drive the wheels—except when additional traction is required. This approach fundamentally alters the efficiency equation at low battery states.

The DM-i system

The Dolphin G is expected to adopt the same 1.5-litre powertrain as the Atto 2 DM-i, which achieves fuel consumption figures around 20 kilometres per litre. Full technical specifications will emerge during the June presentation. Importantly, this is not a range extender in the Leapmotor sense; the engine can deliver traction to the wheels, making it a true plug-in hybrid rather than a series hybrid.

Dimensionally, the Dolphin G measures 4.16 metres in length—above the typical segment B average of under 4.10 metres—with a 2.55-metre wheelbase. BYD describes it as the first model developed specifically for European markets.
