Hyundai has unveiled an all-new generation of the i20, a model positioned between the brand’s traditional hatchbacks such as the VW Polo and Seat Ibiza. The new model features a significantly revised design, increased interior space, and a much more crossover-inspired appearance than before.

Hyundai recently revealed the new i20 in South America during the FIFA World Cup celebrations, where it will replace the locally developed Hyundai HB20. The new i20 is offered with two different 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engines.
Entry-level versions receive a naturally aspirated engine producing 80 hp and 100 Nm of torque, available exclusively with a five-speed manual transmission. Higher trim levels are equipped with a turbocharged 1.0-litre engine delivering 115 hp and 172 Nm, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Sharp-eyed readers will recognize these engines from the previous-generation i20.
Hyundai states that the turbocharged version can accelerate from 0–100 km/h in 11.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 184 km/h.
In terms of styling, the i20 follows Hyundai’s new design philosophy called “Art of Steel.” The front end is dominated by triangular LED headlights featuring distinctive T-shaped lighting elements. On higher trim levels, the headlights are connected by a light bar that creates a large H-shaped motif across the front of the vehicle.
Hyundai has also added several SUV-inspired details: black wheel-arch cladding and protective body panels give the car a tougher appearance, while the raised beltline and pronounced character lines contribute to a more dynamic overall design.
A more digital cabin
Inside, Hyundai introduces a new cockpit with a strong focus on digitalization. Top-spec versions feature a 12.3-inch infotainment display visually integrated with the digital instrument cluster, while entry-level models receive a 10-inch screen.
A unique design feature is the new steering wheel, where four dots symbolize the letter H in Morse code. Although the interior primarily uses hard plastics, higher trim levels offer additional color combinations and a more premium feel. Hyundai has also chosen to retain physical climate-control buttons, a feature many drivers still prefer over touchscreen-only controls.
Scandinavian launch still uncertain
So far, Hyundai has only announced the new i20 with a focus on the South American market. It remains unclear whether this version of the i20 will also be introduced in Scandinavia since Hyundai has not announced any launch plans for the region. While the brand will continue selling the current-generation i20 for some time, the new model would provide a fresh update for the nameplate should it eventually arrive in Scandinavia.
