Polestar has launched car-controlled smart charging in Scandinavian countries and the rest of Europe, marking an expansion of its Polestar Energy service across additional European markets. The feature, rolling out to Polestar 2 and Polestar 4 models, allows vehicles to autonomously manage charging schedules based on electricity prices and grid conditions.
What is the Car-Controlled smart charging?
The new technology eliminates the need for a dedicated smart home charger. Instead, the vehicle communicates directly with the Polestar Energy app to optimize charging times based on price signals, household energy consumption, and local grid stability. Users can manage the service entirely through the app.
According to Polestar, the development addresses a key barrier to smart charging adoption. Previously, drivers required specific hardware installations to access charging optimization features. The car-integrated approach simplifies implementation for existing Polestar owners.
“Most EV charging occurs at home,” said Olivier Loedel, Head of Product Software Management at Polestar. “Removing barriers like specific charger requirements makes this technology accessible to more customers.“
Polestar Energy launched in late 2024 and expanded to 12 European markets in mid-2025. In Scandinavian countries and the rest of Europe, the service integrates with home solar systems and has reduced charging costs by up to 30 percent for participants, according to the company. The Polestar Energy app is available for free download on supported markets.
The initiative reflects broader industry efforts to align electric vehicle charging with renewable energy availability and grid demand, a concern as EV adoption accelerates across Europe.
