Tesla has begun rolling out its conversational AI, Grok, to vehicles across Europe, marking a significant step in the integration of advanced artificial intelligence inside the driving experience. The system, already known from the social platform X, is now available through the latest over-the-air software update for compatible models including Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X.
The AI assistant, developed by xAI — another company founded by Elon Musk — introduces natural language interaction directly inside the vehicle. Conversations with Grok remain anonymous and are not linked to the specific car, according to Tesla.
What Grok can do inside the car
Grok is designed to function primarily as an intelligent in-car assistant. Drivers can activate it using a steering-wheel command or through the central touchscreen. Once engaged, the AI can:
- Set navigation destinations using natural voice commands
- Adjust routes dynamically during a trip
- Explain vehicle features by referencing the digital owner’s manual
- Answer general knowledge questions and hold free-form conversations
The system aims to reduce interaction friction, allowing drivers to control core vehicle functions without navigating menus manually.
Multiple personalities and behavior modes
One of Grok’s distinctive features is its customizable personality system. Users can choose between several predefined voices and tones, including:
- Ara – optimistic female
- Eve – calm and soothing female
- Leo – British male
- Rex – composed male
- Sal – relaxed male
Beyond voice, Grok offers selectable behavioral modes. These range from practical roles such as assistant, language tutor, therapist, and storyteller, to specialized modes for children. There are also adult-only conversational styles, including motivational, romantic, provocative, and debate-oriented modes.
How to activate Grok
Grok is delivered free of charge through Tesla’s 2026.2.6 software update. To function, the system requires a stable internet connection via Wi-Fi — such as a home network or smartphone hotspot — or an active subscription to Premium Connectivity.
