Google has integrated its Gemini AI into Google Maps, transforming the navigation app into a conversational, hands-free copilot that blends navigation, real-time traffic reporting and contextual discovery.

A Smarter, Safer, Hands-Free Experience

Google has rolled out a major update to Google Maps by fully integrating Gemini, its advanced AI. This goes beyond a typical technical update: Maps is now an intelligent copilot that can hold natural, multi-step conversations while you drive — helping you without taking your hands off the wheel or your attention from the road.

Example voice flow:

  • “Find an affordable restaurant with vegan options along my route, within three kilometers.”
  • “What’s the parking like nearby?”
  • “Set a reminder for tomorrow at 5 PM for football practice.”

When authorized, Gemini can connect directly with Google services like Calendar and Gmail, inserting reminders or calendar events on your behalf — blending navigation with productivity seamlessly.

Navigation That Feels Human

One of the standout features is landmark-based navigation. Rather than giving abstract distance-based directions (for example, “turn right in 500 meters”), Maps can now say things like “turn right after the Thai Siam restaurant” and show a real image of the referenced place inside the app.

This capability is powered by Gemini’s analysis of millions of Street View images combined with data from more than 250 million locations. The result: directions that are more natural, less ambiguous and easier to follow — especially in complex or unfamiliar urban environments.

At launch, landmark-based navigation is rolling out in the United States with Android Auto support coming soon.

Real-Time Traffic, Made Easier

Reporting incidents is simplified: drivers can speak plain language — e.g. “I see an accident” or “there’s flooding on the road” — and Maps will update traffic information for other users automatically.

Maps will also deliver proactive traffic alerts, warning you of upcoming slowdowns, closures or delays even when you’re not actively navigating, helping you plan ahead and avoid surprises.

Lens + Gemini: Discover What’s Around You

When you arrive, Google Lens combined with Gemini turns your camera into a live guide. Point your phone at a restaurant, monument or shop and ask questions like “What is this place?” or “Why is this popular?” Gemini can reply with reviews, historical tidbits, recommended dishes and other context — effectively acting like an up-to-date local guide in your pocket.

Availability

The Gemini-powered experience for navigation will roll out over the next few weeks on both Android and iOS, with Android Auto integration following shortly. Availability may vary by region and device.
