BMW is expanding its new Neue Klasse family with a model that many have been waiting for. The new BMW iX4 will be the brand’s electric SUV coupé, featuring an 800-volt system and a new M60 flagship model with 612 hp.

Up to 828 kilometres of range

The BMW iX4 is the third model based on BMW’s new Neue Klasse platform, following the iX3. While the iX3 has a more traditional SUV shape, the iX4 features a distinctly sloping roofline that gives the car a more dynamic appearance.

At launch, the BMW iX4 will be available in two versions: the iX4 40 xDrive and iX4 50 xDrive.

The range-topping iX4 50 xDrive features two electric motors, one on each axle, producing a combined 470 hp and 645 Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0–100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 210 km/h.

However, it is the battery that makes the iX4 particularly interesting. BMW has equipped the model with a new generation of cylindrical lithium-ion cells and a usable battery capacity of 108.7 kWh. This gives the iX4 50 xDrive a WLTP range of up to 828 kilometres.

The smaller iX4 40 xDrive produces 374 hp and 520 Nm. It accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and offers a maximum range of 638 kilometres.

BMW has also made significant improvements to charging performance. All models in the Neue Klasse family use 800-volt technology, and the BMW iX4 can charge at up to 400 kW at a compatible DC fast charger.

For the iX4 50 xDrive, BMW says this means the car can add up to 387 kilometres of WLTP range in just 10 minutes of charging.

The new battery uses cylindrical cells which, according to BMW, provide around 20 percent higher volumetric energy density compared with the previous battery generation.

BMW iX4 M60 gets 612 hp

If 470 hp is not enough, BMW will also offer an even more powerful version.

The BMW iX4 M60 xDrive will sit at the top of the range with an impressive 612 hp and 875 Nm of torque. The M60 can accelerate from 0–100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 240 km/h.

BMW also quotes a preliminary maximum range of 777 kilometres. The M60 version will feature a more sporty M design as well as a specially tuned all-wheel-drive system.

Inside, the iX4 follows the new design philosophy introduced with the Neue Klasse.

BMW introduces its Panoramic iDrive system, with information displayed across the dashboard and at the bottom of the windscreen. The system is combined with a 17.9-inch central touchscreen and an optional advanced 3D Head-Up Display.

More than just a coupé

Although the iX4 is primarily intended to be the sportier version of the iX3, BMW has also focused on maintaining a practical interior.

The long wheelbase and short overhangs help provide a spacious cabin, while a large panoramic glass roof is standard equipment.

However, the sloping roofline naturally means that the iX4 will not be quite as practical as the more traditionally shaped iX3.

The BMW iX4 will make its world premiere in March 2027, when both the iX4 40 xDrive and iX4 50 xDrive will be introduced.
