Aarhus recorded no road deaths in 2025. The year before, 10 people were killed in traffic in the municipality, according to new figures from the Danish Road Directorate, Vejdirektoratet.
Aarhus is one of 31 Danish municipalities where the police registered no fatal accidents in 2025. The group ranges from small island communities such as Læsø, Samsø and Ærø to some of the country’s largest municipalities, including Aarhus, Vejle and Frederiksberg. Together, around 1.6 million people live in these municipalities.
A new interactive tool replaces the annual report
The figures come from Vejdirektoratet’s new interactive accident statistics, published on 28 October 2026. Anyone can use the tool to look up numbers on road accidents and compare municipalities across police districts.
The municipal tool replaces the annual report Trafikulykker fordelt på politikredse, which was last published in 2025. Vejdirektoratet’s website now collects the official Danish accident statistics in one place, with an overview at national and municipal level, data on fatalities and injuries, and earlier reports for following developments over a longer period.
Marianne Foldberg Steffensen, head of department at Vejdirektoratet, said the agency has a responsibility to make the figures accessible and useful. According to her, the tool gives municipalities, police, researchers, journalists and other interested users a way to explore the official numbers themselves and use them more actively.
Five municipalities went from deaths every year to none
A search in the statistics shows that Aarhus is one of only five municipalities that recorded at least one road death in every year from 2020 to 2024, but none in 2025. The others are Hillerød, Randers, Sorø and Vejle.
Why one year is not a trend
Vejdirektoratet welcomes the result but urges caution. Steffensen stressed that it is positive when a municipality goes a full year without a road death, but that one year without fatalities does not by itself prove that road safety has improved markedly. In municipalities with a large population, a single year can also reflect natural variation in a small number of serious accidents.
