We were in Wuhu for the preview of the Chery Tiggo 7 and Tiggo X7 at Chery Night, the event where the Chinese manufacturer showed a long list of new products. The two SUVs are essentially one model in two guises: a road-focused version and a more adventurous one. Both measure around 4.6 metres and share the same 2.70-metre wheelbase and a 115 kW (156 hp) petrol engine.

Same base, different priorities

The Tiggo 7 is aimed at everyday comfort and practicality, with a boot of up to 505 litres. The Tiggo X7 adds six driving modes for difficult terrain, ground clearance of more than 200 mm and a towing capacity of 1,500 kg.

Design: two different languages

The Tiggo 7 uses Chery’s new “Natural Energy” design language, an evolution of the one seen on the Tiggo 9 and Tiggo 8. It has a shield-shaped front end with rounded corners and a diamond-pattern grille, and the front and rear light signatures are coordinated. The drag coefficient falls to 0.315, and the model debuts a new colour, Gleam Gold, inspired by the light over Lake Como.

The Tiggo X7 follows a different approach, which Chery intends to carry across its new series: a flat roof, squared-off volumes and sharp edges, with tiger-inspired headlights and a one-piece bonnet. It is 100 mm wider and 78 mm taller than the Tiggo 7, proportions that reflect its more rugged character.

Model Length Width Height Wheelbase
Chery Tiggo 7 4.60 m 1.87 m 1.71 m 2.70 m
Chery Tiggo X7 4.64 m 1.97 m 1.79 m 2.70 m

Interior: space is the keyword

The Tiggo 7’s cabin takes its cue from yacht interiors, with a horizontal dashboard and a continuous line running across the front and rear doors. The front seats offer eight-point massage and electrically adjustable leg rests, with the seat cushion extending to 536 mm. The boot starts at 505 litres and the rear backrest splits 40:20:40.

The Tiggo X7 adds a water-ion generator to regulate humidity, while a CO2 sensor manages air recirculation. Its 40:20:40 rear seats fold with a single control that can also be operated from the boot. The boot floor is height-adjustable, with separate compartments for clean and dirty items.

Petrol or hybrid

Both SUVs use the same combustion engine, producing 115 kW (156 hp) and 220 Nm, with a declared thermal efficiency of 45.79%. The Tiggo 7 is offered in petrol-only or full hybrid form. The Tiggo X7 is available as a full hybrid or plug-in hybrid, with all-wheel drive also on offer.

The X7 also gets a drive selector called 3-6-1, which pairs three road programmes with six dedicated modes: snow, mud, sand, mountain, rock and wading. The declared wading depth is up to 700 mm.
