Disney+ will become the global streaming home of Formula E starting with the 2026-27 season, giving the all-electric championship a presence in 144 territories worldwide. The multi-year agreement, announced this week by Disney, will also bring coverage to ESPN and ESPN+ in the United States.

A multi-year deal built around full coverage

What stands out most in this agreement is how complete it is. Subscribers in the markets covered by the deal will be able to watch every Formula E race weekend live, from practice and qualifying sessions through to the races themselves. On top of the live action, Disney+ is also set to offer on-demand replays and additional behind-the-scenes programming, giving the championship more visibility outside of race day itself.

The arrangement kicks off with the 2026-27 season, which begins in December and will include 21 rounds across 13 events. Existing local broadcast deals in individual markets are expected to continue alongside the new streaming agreement, rather than being replaced by it entirely.

Why the timing works so well for Formula E

The deal lands right as Formula E is preparing to launch its next-generation GEN4 cars, and the timing could hardly be better for the series. The new generation of vehicles is expected to be considerably faster, with output of up to 600kW and a 0-60mph time of roughly 1.8 seconds. Formula E has described the GEN4 cars as a major technological leap for the championship.

The upcoming season will also bring new race formats to the calendar, including shorter E-Prix Unleashed races held during selected double-header weekends. For Disney, that means acquiring the rights at a moment when Formula E is entering one of its most technically and visually striking eras yet, rather than simply signing another standard sports broadcasting contract.
