The city council of Oslo and the county council of Akershus have agreed to significantly cut the price of monthly transit passes, with changes taking effect from May 3, 2026.
Adult monthly passes will be reduced by between 100 and 400 NOK depending on how many zones the pass covers. In Oslo (Zone 1), the adult monthly pass will drop by 150 kroner in total — from 805 to 655 kroner — with the city council allocating an additional 115 million kroner from its own budget to deepen the cut beyond the national subsidy scheme.
Monthly passes for children and young people will also be reduced by 100 kroner, bringing the price down from 338 to 238 kroner. From August, zone restrictions for children and youth monthly passes will be abolished entirely, meaning young travelers across the greater Oslo region will be able to ride anywhere within the full Ruter network for a flat 238 kroner per month.
The price reductions are contingent on approval of funding applications submitted to a temporary national government subsidy scheme for discounted periodic transit tickets, administered by the Norwegian Railway Directorate.

Vea noted that the city council has now cut the adult monthly pass price by a total of 300 kroner since taking office in 2023, and pointed to rising car traffic into the city as a key motivation for the initiative.
Håkon Snortheim (H), county councilor for transport in Akershus, also praised the deal, calling cheaper monthly passes “an important boost for public transit” and noting that savings of up to 400 kroner a month would be felt directly in residents’ wallets.

The changes apply to all passenger categories, including seniors, students, and youth, with discounts scaled according to the number of zones covered.
