On May 17, BYD officially launched the new BYD E7, an all-electric sedan from the e-series lineup, designed to appeal to a younger audience and meet the needs of taxi services.

With a price ranging from 103,800 to 115,800 yuan (approximately €12,000 to €14,000), it offers an appealing blend of affordability, technology, and practicality.

Simple and practical design

Visually, the BYD E7 features a closed front end with lines that, according to the manufacturer, resemble a “smiley face.” The BYD logo sits prominently in the center, flanked by raised rib lines on the hood.

At the rear, the car sports a layered design with a ducktail spoiler and full-width LED taillights, accompanied by additional lighting at the bottom. On the practical side, traditional door handles remain—a choice in line with the vehicle’s budget positioning.

The E7 is a mid-size sedan by Chinese standards, measuring 4.7 meters in length, 1.9 meters in width, and 1.5 meters in height, with a 2.8-meter wheelbase. It rides on 16-inch wheels, underscoring a focus on function over sporty flair.

The heart of the BYD E7 is a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor, producing 134 hp and 180 Nm of torque. The car is powered by BYD’s renowned Blade LFP batteries, offered in two capacities: 48 kWh and 57.6 kWh, which deliver 450 km and 520 km of range under the CLTC cycle. This would likely translate to around 320 km and 450 km under the more conservative European WLTP cycle—though the car is not expected to be sold in Europe.

Surprisingly tech-savvy interior

Despite its low price point, the E7’s interior delivers a surprisingly high level of technology. Highlights include a 15.6-inch central touchscreen and a 5-inch digital instrument cluster, both powered by BYD’s DiLink 100 operating system. The flat-bottom steering wheel adds a modern touch, while the two-tier center console features cupholders and storage compartments on the lower level, and physical buttons plus a smartphone slot on the upper tier.

Additional features of note include a panoramic sunroof, a 528-liter trunk, and remote control functions for the climate system and door operations.
