Volvo is rolling out Google Gemini as an AI voice assistant across all 16 models equipped with Google built-in, covering model years 2020 and beyond. The update arrives over the air, launching first in the United States before expanding to other markets in the weeks ahead.
The Swedish automaker is upgrading its in-car experience with Gemini, replacing the previous voice assistant with a system built around natural language understanding. Unlike conventional voice commands that require precise phrasing, Gemini maintains the thread of a conversation — so drivers can ask follow-up questions, shift topics, and circle back without having to repeat themselves.
The 16 models receiving the update are: C40, EC40, EX40, XC40, S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, XC60, V90, V90 Cross Country, S90, XC90, EX90, ES90, EX30, and EX60.
What Gemini Can Do Behind the Wheel
The assistant is designed around four core capabilities. The first is trip planning: drivers can ask open-ended questions about destinations, nearby activities, and logistics through a continuous back-and-forth. Starting from something as broad as “find ideas for a family vacation,” the conversation can naturally branch into follow-up questions about specific activities at whichever destination Gemini suggests.
Beyond navigation, Gemini integrates with Google Maps to find points of interest along a route, handles messaging with on-the-fly translation, and selects music based on mood — all without the driver needing to switch context or restate what they want.
Volvo’s Role in Shaping the Technology
The update doesn’t arrive in isolation. Gemini builds on the Volvo Car UX refresh distributed in March 2026 and fits into a broader collaboration: Volvo is Google’s primary automotive partner for developing in-cabin AI features. That relationship means Volvo owners aren’t simply receiving a third-party integration — they’re getting capabilities shaped with their specific in-car use cases in mind.
The rollout begins in the United States, with European availability and other markets to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
