tottA few years ago, the idea would have sounded almost impossible: the Volkswagen Golf, an icon for decades, no longer holds the crown as the brand’s top seller. In 2025, the T-Roc has taken the lead, proving to be more popular among customers than the historic hatchback.
Backed by the Tiguan—recently refreshed and performing strongly again—the T-Roc now stands as Volkswagen’s true sales champion. With such momentum, expectations for its new generation were sky-high, and judging by the first look, it seems Volkswagen has delivered.

2025 Volkswagen T-Roc: a crossover with Coupé flair

The latest T-Roc carries a bold, modern design inspired by larger siblings like the Tiguan and Passat. At the front, a sleek LED light signature stretches from the central badge toward the headlights, which can be optioned with advanced matrix LEDs. The R-Line trim adds a sporty edge with gloss black details, while lower trims feature satin-finished accents. The profile is equally dynamic, enhanced by a contrasting C-pillar design and alloy wheels up to 20 inches.

The new model is larger than before, now measuring 4.37 meters in length—12 cm more than the previous generation. Much of this increase has been used to extend the wheelbase to 2.63 meters, improving cabin space and luggage capacity. The boot now starts at 465 liters, making it one of the most practical options in the segment.

Refined Interior Quality

Volkswagen has kept its promise to upgrade interior quality. While a few hard plastics remain, the cabin feels far more premium, with textured panels, fabric-like inserts, and a redesigned center console. Details such as redesigned handles, customizable rotary controls, and a wireless charging pad add to the sense of refinement. Most importantly, Volkswagen has listened to customer feedback: physical buttons are back on the steering wheel, replacing the less popular touch-sensitive controls.

The cabin is dominated by a 12.9-inch infotainment screen, paired with a 10-inch digital driver’s display. An optional head-up display projects directly onto the windshield—a first for the T-Roc. Other premium touches include a panoramic sunroof, massage seats, and a Harman Kardon sound system. The only drawback? Climate controls are still integrated into the main display instead of having a dedicated panel.

Thanks to the longer wheelbase, four adults travel comfortably, with ample room for heads and knees on the rear seats. The middle passenger in the back has less luck due to the bulky transmission tunnel, but overall comfort levels are strong for this class of SUV.

The first full hybrid Volkswagen

The most significant update comes under the hood. Starting in 2026, the T-Roc will introduce a new full-hybrid system built in-house by Volkswagen. Based on a 1.5-liter petrol engine with an electric compressor and high-voltage battery, it will come in two power outputs: 136 hp and 170 hp, both offering 306 Nm of torque.

Alongside the hybrid, a performance-focused T-Roc R is on the way, boasting 333 hp from the same engine found in the Golf R, as well as a 2.0-liter mild hybrid with all-wheel drive producing 190 hp. At launch, customers will have two 1.5-liter mild hybrids to choose from, rated at 115 hp and 150 hp. All engines are paired with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission—manual options have been dropped entirely.VolVolkswawegVol
