Toyota unveiled the all-new, ninth generation of the Hilux, and for the first time in the model’s history, it will be available as both an electric version  and a diesel hybrid.

This marks a new era for the legendary pickup, now ready to compete against the new Chinese electric pickups and the Isuzu D-Max EV.

New Design and Upgraded Cabin

Externally, the Hilux features a completely new design under the theme “Tough and Agile,” with slim LED headlights and the TOYOTA name written across the front. Inside, the cabin has been significantly upgraded, taking inspiration from the new Land Cruiser. It includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, a large touchscreen up to 12.3 inches, wireless charging, and USB ports for rear passengers. Toyota also introduces electric power steering for the first time in the Hilux, making it easier to maneuver both in the city and on the construction site.

The Toyota T-Mate safety package has been expanded with features such as Blind Spot Monitor, Safe Exit Assist, Driver Monitor Camera, and new systems like Proactive Driving Assist and Emergency Driving Stop System. Over-the-air updates ensure the vehicle remains technologically up to date.

Range of 240 km

The biggest news is undoubtedly the Hilux BEV – the first fully electric version of this legendary workhorse. It retains the same body-on-frame construction as before, and Toyota promises the off-road capabilities remain intact – including a wading depth of 700 mm. The Hilux BEV features permanent all-wheel drive, powered by electric motors on both axles, delivering a total torque of around 473 Nm, split between 205 Nm at the front and 268 Nm at the rear.

The battery has a capacity of 59.2 kWh, giving a range of approximately 240 km, which isn’t much, but Toyota claims charging speed will be among the best in class to minimize downtime. Payload capacity is around 715 kg, and towing capacity is 1,600 kg.

Still Available With a Diesel Engine

Don’t worry – the new Hilux will also be offered with a newly developed 2.8-liter diesel engine with hybrid technology. This version is expected to be the most popular in Europe. The system combines the well-known 2.8-liter diesel engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, consisting of a small lithium-ion battery and a motor generator. The battery is placed under the rear seat, so it doesn’t take up cabin space. This provides a noticeably smoother driving experience, especially during start-up and acceleration when the electric assistance engages.

Fuel economy is also improved without compromising towing power. The Hilux Hybrid 48V can tow up to 3,500 kg and carry up to one ton. The system is built to withstand tough working conditions, with electrical components positioned high to maintain a 700 mm wading depth. It also features Multi-Terrain Select and Multi-Terrain Monitor to assist the driver in challenging off-road situations.
