Polestar will be the first automotive OEM to integrate Google Maps’ new live lane guidance directly into the driver display of one of its vehicles.
The feature debuts in the Polestar 4 and is designed to make highway driving and busy urban commutes easier and safer by giving drivers clearer, real-time lane information.

How it works
The live lane guidance system uses Google’s advanced AI to analyse visual cues captured by a forward-facing camera in the Polestar 4 — for example, lane markings and road signs — and determines which lane the car is currently occupying. That information is then shown on the Polestar 4’s 10.2-inch driver display, producing a new visualisation that highlights all possible lanes for the chosen route and clearly indicates the lane the vehicle is in.
Combined with Google Maps’ navigation, the system delivers both visual and audio reminders that prompt drivers to change lanes in good time. The new presentation reduces last-minute lane changes and missed exits, which can lower driver stress and improve overall safety — especially on complex highways and during intense rush-hour traffic.
Rollout and availability
The feature will be delivered via over-the-air updates in the coming months. It will initially be available for Polestar 4 vehicles in the United States and Sweden, with plans to expand to more markets, additional road types and more customers over time.
Polestar’s integration of live lane guidance builds on a multi-year collaboration with Google. Andrew Foster, Director of Product Management for Google Maps, noted that Polestar was an early partner — Polestar 2 launched in 2020 as the first car with Google built-in — and praised the Polestar 4 as the first vehicle to incorporate this new live lane guidance technology.
