The Polestar 5 was shown driving in public for the first time during the FAT International Ice Race in Zell am See, Austria. Two near-production prototypes of the fully electric grand tourer took to the frozen airfield, offering a first indication of how the model performs in low-grip winter conditions.

The Ice Race is known for its challenging surface, where cars run on compact snow and ice rather than asphalt. In this environment, outright power is less important than control, traction management, and chassis balance. The Polestar 5 prototypes, with a projected output of up to 650 kW, were evaluated primarily on stability and drivability rather than speed.
Observers noted consistent and predictable behavior from the vehicles, particularly during acceleration and directional changes on the frozen track. The low center of gravity typical of electric vehicles, combined with precise torque delivery, appeared to support stable handling despite the limited grip available on ice.
One of the two cars featured a black and yellow racing livery developed in collaboration with the Gran Turismo franchise. The visual presentation drew attention during the event, though the focus remained on the technical demonstration rather than aesthetics.
Kazunori Yamauchi, creator of Gran Turismo, attended the event and experienced the car from the passenger seat during a demonstration lap driven by Swedish racing driver Ted Björk. According to Yamauchi, the vehicle felt controlled and predictable even under the demanding surface conditions.
Electric Performance and Changing Automotive Culture
The appearance of the Polestar 5 at an event traditionally dominated by combustion-engine cars reflects the broader transition taking place in the performance automotive sector. Electric drivetrains offer different characteristics, particularly in torque delivery and smoothness, which are increasingly shaping both vehicle development and driving experience.
While still in prototype form, the Polestar 5’s participation in the Ice Race provided an early look at how the upcoming model behaves outside controlled test environments. More detailed technical specifications and production information are expected to be released closer to the model’s official launch.
