Volvo’s XC60 has long been a benchmark in the premium SUV segment. With accolades such as World Car of the Year in 2018, being Europe’s top-selling plug-in hybrid in 2024, and surpassing 2.7 million units produced by 2025, the XC60 set a high standard. Its successor, the Volvo EX60, has big shoes to fill — and judging by its specs and design, it’s ready to raise the bar even higher.

Volvo’s strategy is clear: the XC60 and EX60 will coexist in the lineup at similar price points, allowing buyers to choose based on technology preference rather than cost. I had a first look at the EX60 in Gothenburg, and here’s a detailed breakdown of what makes this new SUV stand out.

A Bold New Look

The EX60 has grown in size compared to the XC60, measuring 4.80 meters long, nearly 2.0 meters wide (mirrors included), and riding on a 2.97-meter wheelbase. Despite these dimensions, the car’s proportions give it a sleek, almost station-wagon-like presence thanks to expansive glass surfaces and a contrasting rear window frame.

The front adopts the smooth, flowing design language seen on Volvo’s EX30 and EX90. Split headlights are a key feature: daytime running lights sit above in the signature “Thor’s hammer” design, while the main matrix lights occupy the lower section. The traditional grille is gone, reflecting the absence of a conventional engine.

From the side, two character lines and 20–22″ wheels emphasize dynamism, while the “shark fin” door handles add a distinctive touch. At the rear, vertical taillights echo Volvo’s modern aesthetic but with sharper edges for a slightly more assertive look.

For those seeking a more rugged style, the EX60 Cross Country edition adds wider wheel arches, black door trims, and brushed stainless-steel skid plates. Air suspension enables a ground clearance range from 19.4 to 23.4 cm, and wading depth reaches 45 cm.

Interiors That Balance Technology and Comfort

The EX60’s cabin has been fully reimagined for practicality and luxury. A large, curved 15″ horizontal touchscreen takes center stage, running Android Automotive with integrated Google services. All vehicle controls, including climate, are accessible via this responsive interface. Behind the wheel, an 11″ slim digital display replaces the need for a head-up display.

Materials are high-quality and tactile, with eco-leather, soft-touch plastics, wood accents, and textiles. Storage solutions are plentiful: a large central bin, modular armrest with cupholders, and a dedicated phone slot enhance daily usability.

Thanks to the long wheelbase, rear-seat space is generous, with a flat floor and plenty of legroom even for taller passengers. Cargo capacity starts at around 600 liters, expanding to over 1,600 liters with folded rear seats, complemented by a front trunk ranging from 50 to 85 liters depending on drivetrain. The rear compartment features a double floor and modular partitions for flexible storage.

Performance and Electric Power

The EX60 is the first Volvo built on the SPA3 platform, featuring a central “Superset Tech Stack” for hardware and software integration, and a megacast battery-to-body structure, which reduces weight (2,115–2,330 kg depending on configuration) and frees up interior space.

Equipped with 800V technology, the EX60 offers ultra-fast charging: up to 320–370 kW DC allows 10–80% charge in just 18 minutes, and a quick 10-minute top-up adds 340 km of range.
