The new generation of the Lexus RZ isn’t just about technical and styling upgrades—it brings one of the most surprising innovations ever seen in the electric vehicle world. Starting in 2026, the top-tier model will be available with a simulated manual gearbox and artificial engine sound, designed to recreate the classic driving sensation of a gasoline-powered car.
An Engaging Drive, Even in an EV
Beginning in early 2026, the revamped Lexus RZ will launch in Scandinavia (and later in other markets) with a one-of-a-kind feature: a virtual manual gearbox with eight speeds, a dedicated rev counter, and simulated engine sound. The aim is to give EV drivers the emotional and engaging driving experience traditionally associated with combustion-engine vehicles. It’s an idea already tested— and praised—by Hyundai with the Ioniq 5 N, and now adopted by Toyota’s luxury division.

The new Lexus RZ will be offered in three variants:
- RZ 350e (front-wheel drive) with 165 kW (224 hp);
- RZ 500e (all-wheel drive) with 280 kW (381 hp);
- RZ 550e F Sport (all-wheel drive), the most powerful, with 300 kW (408 hp)

This top model features the Interactive Manual Drive system, allowing the driver to use paddle shifters to simulate gear changes. The system dynamically adjusts engine response, sound, and torque in real time, based on driving style and G-force input.

The RZ 550e F Sport also introduces another major innovation: steer-by-wire technology. This replaces the traditional mechanical link between the steering wheel and wheels with an entirely electronic system. The result is a more precise, adaptive, and quiet response—especially at higher speeds.
Steer-by-wire is standard on F Sport models and available as an option on the RZ 500e. A standout feature is the aircraft-inspired yoke steering wheel, offering a futuristic driving feel.
Range and Charging
All versions of the Lexus RZ come with a 77 kWh battery (72 kWh usable), offering a maximum WLTP range of up to 568 km, depending on the model and wheel size.
Version | Power | 0–100 km/h | Top Speed | WLTP Range |
---|---|---|---|---|
RZ 350e FWD | 165 kW (224 hp) | 7.5 s | 160 km/h | 568 km (18″) / 508 km (20″) |
RZ 500e AWD | 280 kW (381 hp) | 4.6 s | 180 km/h | 500 km (18″) / 456 km (20″) |
RZ 550e F Sport AWD | 300 kW (408 hp) | 4.4 s | 180 km/h | 450 km (20″) |
When it comes to charging, the new Lexus RZ offers:
- AC charging up to 22 kW as standard
- DC fast charging up to 150 kW, enabling a 10–80% charge in about 30 minutes

Additionally, the towing capacity is 1,500 kg for all-wheel-drive models and 750 kg for the front-wheel-drive RZ 350e.
