Microsoft has expanded the availability of its latest Surface Laptop 8 and Surface Pro 12 devices, bringing them from the business market to regular consumers. However, the transition comes with a major hardware change: instead of Intel processors, the consumer versions are powered by the second generation of Qualcomm Snapdragon X chips, bringing an ARM based architecture to Microsoft’s premium lineup.
The new devices continue Microsoft’s push toward more efficient Windows machines, but their pricing places them in a different category compared with previous generations. The Surface Laptop 8 starts at 9,799 DKK, representing a significant increase compared with its predecessor.
The Surface Pro 12 starts at 8,999 DKK, with both devices offered in configurations featuring a Snapdragon X2 Plus processor, 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD. Higher end versions can be equipped with up to 64 GB of RAM, Snapdragon X2 Elite chips and up to 1 TB of storage.
Interestingly, Microsoft has introduced an intermediate memory option, following a trend also seen in Apple’s product strategy. Users who consider 16 GB insufficient but do not need 32 GB can now choose a middle configuration that better matches their needs.
Higher costs behind the price increase
Microsoft has explained that the price increase is linked to rising costs across several advanced technology components. The company did not provide many details, but the industry is currently facing higher memory prices due to demand generated by artificial intelligence development, alongside increasing semiconductor manufacturing costs at TSMC as production processes become more advanced.
Despite the higher prices, the new Snapdragon platform promises important improvements, especially in graphics performance. The updated Adreno GPU delivers up to 53% better graphics performance compared with previous solutions, while Microsoft has not yet shared detailed information about CPU improvements.
Longer battery life and subtle design updates
Battery life is one of the strongest points of the new Surface generation. Microsoft claims the Surface Pro 12 can reach up to 15.5 hours of usage, while the Surface Laptop 8 reaches up to 20 hours depending on the configuration and usage conditions.
From a design perspective, the changes are more evolutionary than revolutionary. The overall look remains familiar, but the Surface Laptop 8 introduces a new Jade green color option and, on the 15 inch model, a higher density display with increased resolution.
Another important addition is the new haptic trackpad, designed to provide more precise feedback and a more refined interaction experience with Windows.
The new Surface Pro 12 and Surface Laptop 8 are now available in consumer markets, while previous generation models remain on sale for users looking for a more affordable alternative.
