Instagram cracks down on undisclosed AI generated influencers
Virtual influencers have become widespread on social media, partly because many are genuinely difficult to distinguish from real people at a quick glance. Generative technology has also improved significantly, making it easy to place convincing faces in real locations, create travel photos, and even produce commercial collaborations, despite none of these characters actually existing.
For social platforms, the challenge is no longer stopping the use of artificial intelligence altogether, but making sure users understand who or what they are actually interacting with.
A more explicit label
Instagram is addressing exactly this issue. The platform’s previous AI creator label will become AI-generated profile, a far more explicit description. Rather than simply flagging a creator who uses AI tools, the new label identifies a profile built around a person who is themselves artificially generated.

The distinction may sound subtle, but it matters. A photographer can use AI to edit an image without being a virtual character, while an AI influencer can have a synthetic face, identity and body of content, meaning the subject of the profile itself is artificial.
Undisclosed AI profiles risk losing visibility
Instagram will not stop at labelling. According to the platform, profiles that show AI generated people without disclosing it may lose visibility in recommendation systems, the mechanisms that suggest content to users who do not yet follow the account. For a creator, that means losing one of the main tools for reaching new audiences.
Creators who voluntarily apply the label will not see their reach reduced. Instagram will also allow profiles to contest a classification or add the label later to restore distribution.
Part of a wider push on content tools
Among Instagram’s other recent features is First Draft, a tool that automatically analyses clips and cleans them up before editing begins. Notably, the feature does not rely on artificial intelligence.
