IHG Hotels & Resorts has signed an agreement with Newhope Real Estate to bring the Regent brand to Chengdu for the first time, a move that strengthens the group’s upper luxury footprint across some of Greater China’s most important urban markets. The announcement came on 15 July 2026 in Shanghai, and it marks another step in a broader strategy that has been building steadily since IHG acquired Regent back in 2018.

A tower rising above the city’s historic core

Regent Chengdu is set to open in the third quarter of 2029, occupying levels 39 through 48 of a striking 233 metre landmark tower. The location itself is significant, sitting in the heart of Jinjiang District, just steps from Chunxi Road, Tianfu Square, and the historic commercial heart of the city. The hotel will offer 180 guestrooms and suites, each designed to frame sweeping views over the skyline and the winding Jinjiang River below.

Why Chengdu matters to IHG

According to Daniel Aylmer, Chief Executive Officer for Greater China at IHG Hotels & Resorts, Chengdu has long been a key market for the company, and it already hosts IHG’s West China regional headquarters. He describes the city as a gateway to Southwest China, one that blends rich cultural heritage with a vibrant consumer market and strong potential for luxury hospitality growth. For Aylmer, the arrival of Regent in Chengdu is both a milestone for the brand and a way to deepen IHG’s luxury presence across the wider region.

Jiang Mengjun, Chairman and President of Newhope Real Estate, echoed that sentiment, framing the partnership as a reflection of his company’s roots in the city and its ambition to create destinations that connect Chengdu with the world. The project sits within the D10 Wangjiang development, and Jiang describes it as an opportunity to bring world class hospitality to the city while celebrating what makes it distinctive.

What makes Regent, Regent

Founded in 1970, Regent has spent more than half a century cultivating a reputation built on grand entrances, cinematic memories, and a blend of mythical lore with Asian influences. Today it sits within IHG’s luxury and lifestyle portfolio, and the brand’s guiding philosophy centers on lifting guests above distraction, giving them space to feel like the best version of themselves.

That philosophy will show up throughout Regent Chengdu in very tangible ways. Guests can expect meticulously designed spaces, signature dining destinations, and a dedicated spa sanctuary. Signature Regent touches will also be present, including Personal Havens, intimate spaces scattered through the hotel designed for quiet, indulgent moments, along with an Experience Agent who acts as a single point of contact from before arrival through to departure, and small With Compliments gestures woven into the stay as standard practice. Together, these details are meant to deliver personalised service while offering guests a genuine sense of tranquility high above the city’s energy.

Part of a wider global expansion

IHG’s modern reimagining of Regent began with Regent Shanghai Pudong in 2020, followed by Regent Chongqing in 2021, and the brand has continued building momentum ever since. Today there are 11 Regent hotels and resorts open worldwide, totaling 3,212 rooms, with a further 12 properties in the pipeline representing another 2,210 rooms.

Within Greater China specifically, Regent already operates six hotels spanning Shanghai, Hong Kong, Beijing, Chongqing, and Taipei, and more projects remain in development. The signing of Regent Chengdu adds another key gateway city to that growing list, reinforcing the brand’s long term strategy of anchoring itself in the region’s most significant urban destinations.
