Danish racing driver Frederik Vesti will be the only Dane with a direct link to Formula 1 next season after being appointed Mercedes’ sole reserve driver for the 2026 campaign. The 24-year-old takes on a key role at a time when expectations are high for Mercedes, as Formula 1 prepares for a new era under an all-new technical regulation framework.

If either George Russell or Kimi Antonelli is unable to race during the season, Vesti will be the driver called upon to step into the Mercedes cockpit.

A unique role within Mercedes

Mercedes confirmed in a press release that Vesti will be the team’s only reserve driver for the entire 2026 season, underlining the level of trust placed in the Danish talent.

“I’m really excited to be more present at the race tracks. It’s very cool for me and a big step closer to my dream of racing in Formula 1,” Vesti said.

The appointment brings Vesti closer than ever to a potential Formula 1 race debut, while also giving him extensive exposure to the team’s operations throughout the season.

Confidence from the team

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff highlighted the importance of having a reserve driver who knows the car inside out and is ready to step in at short notice.

“You know the car better than anyone else, and if Kimi or George were to get food poisoning, we know we have a driver who can deliver. Of course, we don’t wish for any food poisoning, but it’s good to know you’re there,” Wolff said.

Track time and endurance racing

In addition to his reserve driver responsibilities, Vesti is set to take part in at least four Friday practice sessions during the 2026 Formula 1 season, giving him valuable on-track experience in a competitive F1 environment.

Alongside his Formula 1 duties, Vesti will also compete in Cadillac’s Le Mans programme, driving a closed-cockpit prototype in the Hypercar category. The dual programme highlights his versatility and growing presence across top-level motorsport.
