Finland is set to introduce a new automated traffic light system designed to give emergency vehicles priority on the road, creating a coordinated “green wave” that helps them move through intersections faster and more safely.

How the Green Wave system works

The system, developed by Finland’s national traffic authority Fintraffic, will automatically detect the location of emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire engines and rescue units. Once an emergency vehicle is recognised, traffic lights along its route will switch to green, allowing it to pass through intersections without unnecessary stops.

The technology is intended to prevent emergency vehicles from getting stuck at busy junctions, a common cause of delays and safety risks during urgent responses.

According to Fintraffic, the primary objective of the new system is to reduce response times while also improving safety for both emergency crews and other road users. Intersections are among the most dangerous points for emergency vehicles, especially in congested areas, and automating traffic light priority helps remove uncertainty in critical moments.

“The aim is to implement a nationwide green wave for rescue and emergency units, enabling them to reach the scene safely and quickly,” said Juho Neuvonen, Product Manager at Fintraffic.

Successful Pilot Project Shows Promising Results

The nationwide rollout follows a pilot project that delivered strong results. During the testing phase, approximately 700 intersections and 300 emergency vehicles were connected to the system.

Importantly, no emergency-related accidents were recorded at the intersections included in the pilot. Fintraffic says this clearly demonstrates the system’s effectiveness, particularly in urban areas where traffic congestion can significantly slow down emergency responses.

Nationwide Rollout Starting This Summer

The national traffic light priority system is expected to become officially operational from July. However, Fintraffic notes that full nationwide implementation will take time, as local traffic systems need to be tested and updated to support the new technology.

All cities, municipalities and wellbeing services counties in Finland are invited to join the system, with the long-term goal of creating a seamless, country-wide green wave for emergency vehicles.

A Step Toward Smarter Traffic Management

By using real-time vehicle location data and automated traffic control, Finland’s green wave system represents a major step toward smarter, safer traffic management. For emergency services, it could mean reaching people in need faster—when every second truly matters.
