As Nordhavn keeps growing, the Copenhagen M4 metro stations are set to reach further north with new stops at Levantkaj and Nordhavn C (Tunnelfabrikken) planned for 2030. The extension adds about 1.6 km of elevated track beyond Orientkaj, creating more direct links to Østerport and Copenhagen Central Station (København H), according to Metroselskabet.

M4 extension to Levantkaj and Nordhavn C

The project continues the M4 north as an elevated railway from Orientkaj to two new stops:  Levantkaj and Nordhavn C (Tunnelfabrikken). From the future terminus at Nordhavn C, projected journey times are 7 minutes to Østerport and 14 minutes to København H, offering fast access to key rail interchanges and the city centre.

Contract and budget: MT Højgaard to lead construction

MT Højgaard Danmark has been selected as turnkey contractor with early‑involvement, working alongside Rambøll and Cobe on design and delivery in collaboration with Metroselskabet. After a formal standstill, a collaboration phase precedes a design‑and‑build contract. The estimated contract value is 900 million DKK(€121 million). Works are expected to start in 2027, keeping the 2030 opening target.

Faster links for a growing Nordhavn

Nordhavn is Copenhagen’s largest ongoing urban development area. When fully built—around 2060—it is expected to host about 35,000 residents alongside new jobs and education facilities. Extending the M4 ensures frequent, high‑capacity public transport from day one in new neighbourhoods around Levantkaj and Tunnelfabrikken.

M4 just opened — expansion and next steps to 2030

After the June 2024 opening of the M4 branch to Sydhavn and Valby—adding five stations and enabling through services between Nordhavn and Copenhagen South (København Syd)Metroselskabet is moving ahead with the Nordhavn extension.

A short standstill will be followed by a collaboration phase and detailed design, before works begin in 2027. The new Copenhagen M4 metro stations at Levantkaj and Nordhavn C (Tunnelfabrikken) are targeted to open in 2030, creating the line’s new northern anchor.
