Sweden has one of the most toll free road networks in Europe. There is no motorway vignette and no toll booth on the open road. The cost of driving in Sweden comes almost entirely from the congestion tax in two cities and a small number of specific bridges.
Sweden congestion tax
Sweden does not use physical toll booths for its city charges. Cameras read the number plate automatically and the Swedish Transport Agency, Transportstyrelsen, sends an invoice afterward.
Stockholm congestion charge
The charge applies on weekdays between 6:00 and 18:29, with a daily maximum of SEK 135, reduced to SEK 105 during the off peak season. It does not apply on weekends, public holidays, or during the first five weekdays of July.
Gothenburg congestion charge
Gothenburg applies the same weekday hours with a daily maximum of SEK 60. A useful rule protects frequent drivers: passing several toll points within 60 minutes only triggers one charge, at the highest rate recorded in that hour.

Good to know: drivers with a foreign registered vehicle do not automatically receive an invoice. Payment has to be arranged through the Epass24 portal, and missing the deadline adds a penalty fee of around SEK 500.
Oresund bridge Sweden
The Oresund bridge connects Malmo to Copenhagen and costs a passenger car from around fifty euros depending on the payment method chosen.
Sweden bridge tolls
Three further domestic crossings carry small automatic charges billed the same way as the congestion tax: the Motala bridge, the Sundsvall bridge, and the Skuru bridge near Stockholm. All three cost well under one euro per crossing. The Svinesund bridge toward Norway, on the other hand, has been completely toll free since 2009, once its original construction loan was repaid.
Sweden fuel prices
Fuel prices in Sweden sit roughly in the middle of the European range, generally more moderate than in Denmark or Norway. Winter tyres are compulsory between December and March, worth budgeting for when renting a car outside those dates.
Avoiding Stockholm and Gothenburg city centres on weekdays between 6:00 and 18:29 removes most of the cost of driving in Sweden entirely, and a July visit skips the Stockholm charge altogether.
