The combination of cycling and Metro travel is deeply embedded in everyday life in Copenhagen. Thousands of commuters cycle to and from Metro stations every day, but during the dark winter months many forget one essential detail: bike lights. This poses a clear challenge for traffic safety across the city.

To address the issue, Metroselskabet has joined forces with the City of Copenhagen, Frederiksberg Municipality, the Danish Road Safety Council, and the Danish Cyclists’ Federation to distribute 5,000 free bike lights at selected Metro stations. The initiative kicks off today at Rådhuspladsen station, where cyclists can also receive basic bike maintenance, including tire inflation and chain lubrication.

Strengthening Safe and Seamless Urban Mobility

Copenhagen’s Lord Mayor sees the initiative as a concrete step toward safer and more coherent mobility in the city.

“Cycling and the Metro are the backbone of sustainable transport in Copenhagen, and they need to work well together. When so many Copenhageners cycle to and from the Metro, it must also feel safe to do so. That’s why this is a very positive initiative that makes it easy to have proper lights on your bike,” says Sisse Marie Welling, Lord Mayor of Copenhagen.

The City of Copenhagen continues to focus on both infrastructure and practical, everyday solutions to make cycling easier and safer throughout the year.

In Frederiksberg cycling and metro go hand in hand

On Frederiksberg, the close connection between cycling and Metro travel is highlighted as a key part of daily mobility.

For many residents on Frederiksberg, cycling and the Metro are closely linked in everyday life. That’s why it makes perfect sense to take responsibility for small but crucial measures that make the journey safer, such as bike lights. This is a good solution that makes a difference right here and now,” says Frederiksberg Mayor Michael Vindfeldt.

Around 10 percent of the estimated 300,000–400,000 daily Metro journeys involve passengers cycling to or from a station.

For Metroselskabet, the initiative goes beyond the Metro ride itself. In 2025, passengers made a total of 135 million journeys on the Metro’s four lines.

Bike Service in the ‘M-Pit’

At Rådhuspladsen station, cyclists are welcomed into the “M-pit” – a temporary bike service tent staffed by professional mechanics. Here, bikes receive a quick check-up, including pumped tires, lubricated chains, and installation of the free bike lights before riders continue their journey.

According to a nationwide survey conducted in 2025 among 1,338 cyclists, 44 percent feel unsafe when other cyclists ride without lights.

The remaining bike lights will be distributed on Wednesday, 28 January, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Frederiksberg and Kongens Nytorv Metro stations. Cyclists will also have the opportunity to receive a free Metro ticket that includes bike access.
