Apple has announced that iOS 27 will bring meaningful speed improvements to older iPhone models — a reversal of the pattern many users have come to dread, where software updates leave hardware feeling sluggish rather than refreshed.
The update targets iPhones that also support iOS 26, meaning models from the iPhone 11 onwards. For the millions of users still carrying an iPhone 11, 12, or 13, this could mark the most relevant iOS release in several years — not because of new features, but because of what it does to the experience they already have.
Up to 30 percent faster app launch times
Apple has reworked several core components of the operating system to improve responsiveness. The way iOS distributes processor load has been optimised, and the system has been made more efficient at retrieving key data from memory. According to Apple, the result is app launch times up to 30 percent faster than before.
This applies to both first-party and third-party apps. For users on older hardware, the difference between a phone that hesitates and one that responds instantly is often what drives the decision to upgrade — and Apple appears to be directly addressing that threshold.
Faster AirDrop and iCloud transfers
Beyond raw app performance, Apple has improved two features that form part of everyday use for many iPhone owners. AirDrop file transfers are said to be up to 80 percent faster, while the process of uploading photos and videos to iCloud has also been made more efficient. On older devices where every incremental gain is noticeable, these changes may translate into a meaningfully smoother daily experience.
A software update that extends hardware life
The stated aim behind these changes is to help users keep their phones longer without feeling the need to buy new ones. That framing is notable. Rather than leading with headline AI features or camera upgrades, Apple is positioning iOS 27 as an update that serves the existing install base — particularly the large number of users who have not yet moved to the iPhone 14 generation or later.
