Apple has unveiled the iMac with the M6 chip, an update that leaves the design untouched and focuses on processing power and wireless connectivity. The all in one desktop can be configured with up to 12 CPU cores and 12 GPU cores.

Performance figures from Apple’s own tests

According to Apple, the new iMac is up to 50 percent faster than the M4 model in tasks such as working with Excel, and up to twice as fast in selected graphics workloads. These numbers come from the company’s internal testing and apply to specific tasks, so real world gains will vary with the type of work.

Same look, same display

Anyone familiar with the current model will recognise the new one at a glance. The iMac keeps its 24 inch 4.5K display with 500 nits of brightness and remains available in seven colours. The 12 megapixel camera with Center Stage is carried over, as is Desk View, which shows the work surface from above during video calls. The six speaker system with Dolby Atmos support is also unchanged.

For owners of the M4 iMac, speed is therefore the main reason to consider an upgrade. For new buyers, the M6 simply means a faster machine for the same type of package.

Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and faster Ethernet

The wireless side is updated with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Wired networking depends on the configuration: 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet is optional and requires the 12 core CPU and GPU version. That same model is the one that offers four Thunderbolt 4 ports.

Siri AI still without Danish

Apple highlights its new Siri AI in the launch material, but Danish users will have to wait.

The assistant is currently in beta in macOS 27.2 and Danish, Norwegian and Swedish are not among the supported languages. No date has been given for its arrival in Danish, as it depends on the ongoing disagreement between Apple and the EU.

Pricing and availability

Preorders open on 28 October, with sales starting on 6 November in the markets included in the first wave. In the United States, pricing begins at 1,499 dollars for the 10 core CPU and GPU model and 1,699 dollars for the 12 core version. Danish pricing has not yet been announced.
