Ducati has unveiled the Desmo450 SM, its first dedicated racing supermotard. Built around a 449.6 cm³ Desmo single cylinder engine producing 63.5 hp, the bike pairs dedicated Showa suspension, Brembo brakes and purpose built electronics. It reaches European dealerships from December 2026.
From motocross platform to supermotard racer
The Desmo450 SM is derived from the Desmo450 MX motocross bike, but receives suspension, wheels, brakes, gearing, clutch and electronics specifically developed for supermotard racing. The transformation goes well beyond swapping wheel sizes, touching the chassis setup, braking system, anti-hop clutch, final drive and electronic strategy. Where the road going Hypermotard is built for the street, the SM’s geometry, slick tyres and maintenance intervals measured in hours make clear this is a bike built for the track.
63.5 hp from the Desmo single
The 449.6 cm³ single cylinder engine produces 63.5 hp, around 46.7 kW, at 9,400 rpm, with peak torque of 53.5 Nm arriving at 7,500 rpm and the limiter stepping in at 11,900 rpm.

The Desmodromic valve system lets the engine extend its power delivery toward higher revs. On track, that wider usable range allows riders to hold a gear longer and can reduce the number of shifts needed between corners. Ducati has tuned engine response together with the chassis and electronics package, aiming to reduce physical effort for the rider and improve consistency lap after lap, while still leaving room for more experienced riders to fine tune the setup.
Showa suspension tuned specifically for supermotard
Up front sits a Showa closed cartridge fork with 49 mm upside down tubes, adjustable for compression and rebound, offering 280 mm of travel with dedicated springs and tuning, plus Kashima coating on the tubes. The setup is built to support hard braking, precise turn in and control across rougher sections of track. The left fork leg integrates a radial caliper mount, while the machined triple clamps are sized around the 16.5 inch front wheel.

The fully adjustable Showa rear shock works through a progressive linkage, with 295 mm of rear wheel travel, tuned to maintain traction and balance under acceleration, braking and changes in track surface.
Bartubeless wheels cut 1.2 kg
The Takasago Excel aluminium rims measure 16.5 inches at the front and 17 inches at the rear. The Bartubeless system removes inner tubes entirely, cutting rotating and unsprung mass by 1.2 kg compared with a tubed setup. Stock tyres are Metzeler Racetec Slick SM, sized 125/75 R16.5 front and 165/55 R17 rear. The front fender, hand guards and fork guards are all shaped specifically around supermotard use.
Brembo Stylema calipers and Galfer discs
The front brake system uses a Brembo PR15x19 radial master cylinder, a Stylema radial caliper and a floating 310 mm Galfer disc with an aluminium flange, prioritising power and modulation for the hard braking typical of the discipline.
At the rear sits a 240 mm Galfer disc with a floating Brembo caliper. The rear brake plays a significant role in managing chassis balance during corner entry, when the rider combines deceleration, downshifting and controlled rear wheel slide.
A Suter clutch built for sliding into corners
The transmission uses a Suter anti-hop clutch with dedicated tuning, controlling resistance torque during downshifts and helping manage the rear end during slide entries. Quick Shift handles clutchless upshifts, while the DID chain final drive uses gearing specifically defined for supermotard riding, suited to the short bursts of acceleration and frequent corner exits typical of mixed circuits.
Traction control that reads rear wheel slip
Ducati Traction Control uses a dedicated calibration to estimate actual rear wheel slip, with riders able to choose from four intervention levels or switch the system off entirely to suit track conditions.
The package also includes Launch Control and Engine Brake Control, both linked to two configurable Riding Modes, adjustable through the optional X-Link app to match rider preference and track type. Ducati is clear that electronics don’t replace the mechanical work done by tyres, suspension and clutch, and on the Desmo450 SM, all of these elements were developed together as one system, with adjustments that let riders dial in exactly how much assistance and response they want.
An aluminium frame with motocross roots
The twin spar aluminium frame is carried over from the Desmo450 MX. Ducati reduced the number of welds to manage weight, stiffness and durability, while keeping the intake tract as straight as possible. The swingarm is cast aluminium, and the fuel tank holds 7.2 litres.
Maintenance measured in hours, not kilometres
Oil changes are due every 15 hours of use. Piston replacement and valve clearance checks are scheduled every 45 hours, with a full engine rebuild every 90 hours. The alternator and clutch covers use rubber gaskets, while the cylinder head uses a metal gasket, avoiding three part sealing paste and aiming to speed up the frequent maintenance work a competition bike demands.
An optional Com-Link module enables predictive maintenance, monitoring component use and stress to help fine tune service intervals, without replacing the scheduled maintenance programme itself. The Ducati Desmo450 SM reaches dealerships from December 2026.
